Ervin Hostetler was the first to invent a wooden door that could fold horizontally and then store itself overhead. Emanuel Mullet, who bought Hostetler’s business, moved it to Mt. Hope, Ohio, a large Amish community. Amish craftsman were hired to make garage doors, and a high-quality product was released.
Soon architectural designs and tastes changed, and homes were built onto smaller properties. This meant that garages needed to be built closer to the home, and eventually became a part of the home’s design. Today a garage is a very important aspect of a home. It increases a home’s worth and gives a sense of security to the occupants.
