Garage DoorOverhead doors are the most common type of garage door. They are known as overhead doors because they will roll upwards and rest on a track overhead, and also because of the company that first produced and manufactured them.

In 1921 C.G. Johnson invented a garage door that would lift-up, and by 1926 he was able to make an electric garage door opener. Ervin Hostetler was the first to invent a wooden door that could fold horizontally and then store itself overhead. Emanuel Mullet, who bought Hostetler’s business, moved it to Mt. Hope, Ohio, a large Amish community. Amish craftsman were hired to make garage doors, and a high-quality product was released.

Soon architectural designs and tastes changed, and homes were built onto smaller properties. This meant that garages needed to be built closer to the home, and eventually became a part of the home’s design. Today a garage is a very important aspect of a home. It increases a home’s worth and gives a sense of security to the occupants.

Garage doors have come a long way with design and safety. There are sensors that prevent the doors from closing on cars and people, and some can even be opened with a smart phone. Choosing a garage door is now a more complicated task, since there is a plethora of options available. You can have multiple garage doors, windows, no windows, carriage-house style, and any color imaginable.
